Adventure Cameraman 30 Years As An Adventure Cameraman : Two Hanging On A Thred

For three decades, I have had the privilege of capturing some of the most extraordinary moments in the world as an adventure cameraman. From scaling towering peaks to diving deep into the ocean depths, my journey behind the lens has been nothing short of thrilling. Today, I take you on an exciting ride through my 30-year adventure, sharing the challenges, the triumphs, and the unforgettable moments that have shaped my career.

The Birth of an Adventure Cameraman

My path as an adventure cameraman started during a backpacking trip through the rugged terrains of South America. As I witnessed breathtaking landscapes and encountered diverse cultures, I realized the potential to document these experiences through the lens of a camera. Little did I know that this realization would pave the way for an incredible career that would take me to the far corners of the Earth.

Embracing the Unknown

The beauty of being an adventure cameraman lies in the uncertainty of each expedition. Whether it's battling extreme weather conditions or immersing myself in unfamiliar environments, I have learned to embrace the unknown. It is in these moments of spontaneity where I capture the raw essence of nature and humanity, providing viewers with a glimpse into unseen worlds.

Scaling New Heights

One of the countless highs of my career has been the opportunity to accompany mountaineers on their daring conquests. From the towering Himalayas to the majestic Andes, I have climbed alongside those who seek to conquer nature's giants. The physical exertion may be immense, but capturing the sheer determination and triumph in the climbers' eyes makes every step worthwhile.

Exploring Underwater Wonders

In the depths of the world's oceans, a whole new realm of life unveils itself. Equipped with waterproof cameras and a voracious curiosity, I have dived into the crystal-clear waters to document the mesmerizing underwater world. Swimming alongside awe-inspiring marine creatures and witnessing their vibrant habitats has left me in awe of the incredible beauty that lies hidden beneath the surface.

The Power of Wildlife Encounters

Encounters with wildlife have always held a special place in my heart. From the protection of sea turtles nesting on remote beaches to documenting the majestic movements of endangered predators, my camera has been my instrument to raise awareness and convey the urgent need for conservation. The connection formed during these encounters reminds me of the intricate bond humans share with the animal kingdom.

Overcoming Challenges

A career as an adventure cameraman is not without its fair share of challenges. Facing extreme weather conditions, technical malfunctions, and physical exhaustion is an inherent part of the job. However, it is through these challenges that I have grown both as a professional and as an individual. The ability to adapt swiftly and find solutions in the face of adversity is what separates an average shot from an exceptional one.

Preserving the Moments

In the digital age, the art of capturing genuine moments can easily be overshadowed. My mission as an adventure cameraman is to preserve the rawness and authenticity of the experiences I encounter. With every click of the shutter, I aim to transport viewers to far-flung destinations, stirring their sense of wonder and inspiring their own adventures.

A New Chapter Begins

As I reflect on the past three decades, it is with immense gratitude that I look ahead to the adventures yet to come. The evolution of technology and the ever-changing landscapes present endless opportunities to continue capturing the essence of our planet. With humility in my heart and my camera in hand, I embark on a new chapter filled with uncertainties, thrills, and the promise of discovering unforgettable moments that will shape my journey as an adventure cameraman.

30 years as an adventure cameraman have been marked by indescribable excitement and a profound sense of purpose. From the peaks of the world's highest mountains to the deepest trenches of the ocean, I have witnessed the raw beauty of the Earth and the resilience of the human spirit. It is my hope that through my work, others may be inspired to embark on their own adventures and protect the wonders of our planet for generations to come.

ln his years working for Television. multi-award-winning cameraman Sid Perou
originated or played a major role in something like 50 television films.
This book tells the untold stories behind the making of those films, which are sometimes
as entertaining as the films themselves, sometimes precarious, sometimes dangerous,
but more often outrageous and funny.

In the mid-sixties, Sid was working as an assistant sound-recordist for the BBC
film Unit at Ealing Film Studios, but in his free time was travelling up to Yorkshire
where he had become a passionate about the caves and with left-over lengths of l6 mm film
from the BBC he had begun experimenting with filming underground. When the
BBC decided to make a programme about a cave rescue. Sid found himself
seconded to do camerawork. with the delicate task of filming on an actual cave
rescue as it happened. The resulting film which tragically ended in the death of
the young man concerned has a big impact on Sid. He left the stability of working for
the BBC to move into a caving hut in the Yorkshire Dales. He was determined to
pursue the techniques of underground filming and wanted to show his chosen
sport in a more positive light. It took a year to get his first commission. (The Lost
River of Gaping Gill 1970) but his first efforts. using a clockwork Bolex camera and
homemade lights. were well received A letter from Chris Braisher, who was
controller of BBC2 at the time. says that it - “contained some of the most beautiful
footage I have ever seen on television".
The most fruitful period. however. came when Sid forged a relationship with Bill
Greaves, the Area Manager of BBC North in Leeds. An extremely ambitious 5 part
series “Beneath the Pennines" brought the first awards and brought Sid to the
notice of a wider public. Sid then found himself having to cast his net wider and
turned his attention to climbing, using the rope techniques that he had learned
while caving to move up the rock face with the climber. Once again "Rock Athlete"
was seen as a landmark series in the sport and attracted awards.
Since those
days, Sid has brought his always innovative approach to other adventure sports like
hot-air ballooning, hang gliding, canoeing, and microlight flying and has filmed in many
countries and for prestigious companies like the National Film Board of Canada
National Geographic and Nova. Throughout the 8O.s he became one of the best
known cameramen in Britain.

The greatest accolade came in 1993 when he won a PRIMETIME EMMY AWARD
for the work that he did for National Geographic Television in the USA.
