Robert is a soft spoken seventeen-year old high school student from Fort Worth, Texas. With just a couple of weeks left before summer, Robert receives a job offer to work as a camp counselor at Camp Nikan, located near the Chesapeake Bay on Maryland’s eastern shore. Feeling uneasy about leaving home and friends for the first time in his life, he reluctantly accepts the job to please his parents and his growing sense of adventure.
Upon arriving at Camp Nikan, Robert becomes amazed at the new landscape, noticing the vast green forests and enormous size of the Chesapeake Bay. Throughout the next several weeks, Robert learns more about this new world by participating and leading activities on a historic sailing vessel, trudging through the murky waters of the eastern shore’s swamp land, and venturing through the dark forests at night.
Though Robert is filled with a sense of wonder in this new world, he continues to struggle with a sense of belonging, being a thousand miles away from the only home and people he has ever known. Robert struggles with connecting with the older veteran camp staff and finding a home amongst an environment that seems completely foreign to the one he grew up in.
This struggle is coupled with a sense of fulfillment Robert receives from discovering a new place and helping kids find their own sense of belonging. Robert notices the growth in his campers as they become more comfortable with each other, find a home within the undeveloped forest of Maryland, and tackle their own home sickness feelings.
