Chess is a team game. Your chess pieces are your team. They are your army. You are their general. Once this association is clearly understood, you will realize the need for coordinated action.

Imagine yourself on an ancient battle field with equally matched armies ready to fight. With differently skilled weaponry, it is important to see the whole battle as it takes place. With foot soldiers, cannon, cavalry and archers, each movement has to be coordinated.

If your army is not working as a team, and do not have an overall plan, you will lose. To win, you will have to master the techniques of offensive and defensive tactics. All warfare is based on deception. A skilled general must be a master of the Art of war. Creating formations to confuse and delude the enemy he conceals his true dispositions and ultimate intent. His primary target is the mind of the opposing commander.

The wise general cannot be manipulated. He may withdraw, but when he does, he move so swiftly that he cannot be overtaken. His retreats are designed to entice the enemy, to unbalance him and to create a situation favorable for a decisive counterstroke. He creates conditions certain to produce a quick decision. The expert commander strikes only when the situation assures victory. To create such a situation is the ultimate responsibility of generalship. Before he gives battle the superior general causes the enemy to disperse. The business of a general is to creating changes and to manipulating them to his advantage. The wise general weighs the situation before he move. He does not blunder aimlessly into baited traps. He changes his methods and alters his plans so that people have no knowledge of what he is doing. He is prudent, but not hesitant. He know that there are some roads not to be followed, some armies not to be attacked, and some positions not to be contested. The first essential of military operations is to preserve one's own forces and annihilate the enemy.

If one is to learn anything from the varying styles of fighting of the numerous nations that make up the military history of the Ancient and Medieval World, Then it is that battles are won by the commander,
Who employs the capabilities of combined arms to their maximum effectiveness?
By combining the maneuverability of arches, with the defensive capabilities of heavily armored men-at-arms plus the use of armored cavalry to attack or counter attack. It was a method that brought to defense and marked tactical superiority over offense, with dismounted men at arms acting as the defensive base for the fire power of archers in a system which has caused infantry to remain as the primary element of ground combat forces since the hundred year war.

Chess let's you be Napoleon!

Strategy is the most important department of the Art of War, and strategical skills is the highest and rarest function of a military genius. Improve your chess skills by applying military strategy and tactics to your game. Learn how to create a battle plan.

Let's face it, the hardest part of chess is learning to create a plan of action for battle.
