This book describes a cruise between Moscow and St. Petersburg along the Volga and other waterways (The Volga-Baltic Waterway river and canal system). Usually the Russian cruise boats are shared by several travel cruise companies and are multinational. However, on day trips away from the cruise boat the individual travel companies will have their own transport and Russian guides.
The following places are described and illustrated with numerous photographs:
Moscow, Uglich, Yaroslavl, Goritsy, Kizhi, Mandrogi, and St Petersburg.
Information is given about the waterway system between Moscow and St. Petersburg. All major tourist sights are described along with some history. It is out of the scope of this guide book to provide a detailed history and where necessary an appropriate guide book may wish to be consulted for such detailed information.
The cruise follows parts of the tourist circuit “The Golden Ring”. The places visited have many palaces, colourful churches and museums and provide an outstanding experience of Russia.
The cruise boats traverse rivers, canals and large reservoirs and lakes such as:
The Moscow Canal, The Moscow River, Uglich reservoir, Rybinsk Reservoir, Sheksna River
White Lake (Lake Beloye),Kovzna River, Volga-Baltic Canal, Lake Onega, Svir River,
Lake Ladoga, Neva River.
The very large reservoirs may be sea like with some motion, although not very severe, that could cause sea sickness if one is sensitive to such motion, an appropriate travel sickness medication could be taken.
The cruise starts in Moscow and ends in St. Petersburg. In some areas along the waterway system visits are made to places that have been specifically developed to show the history of rural Russia.
Detailed information is given with regard to applying for and obtaining the necessary visa document for a visit to Russia. This however is a guide only and complete up to date information should be obtained from the website for the visa application. Note that the information at the time of publication applies specifically to persons born in and living in the UK. For travellers born outside the UK and / or living outside the UK it is advised that the website for the visa application must be consulted. A link is given in the book to the website.
