There is no such thing as a safe skydive and we should be prepared for a serious malfunction from our very first jump onwards. When things go wrong you have just seconds to carry out vital actions that could either save, or take your life. At deployment time you have about twelve seconds at terminal velocity to hit the ground. And the remains of the human body hitting the ground at 120 mph is not an image that can be easily forgotten. We remember them, but have to handle that situation effectively or never jump again.I had a high speed spinning malfunction that almost cost me my life. The main parachute malfunctioned and in the spin I later calculated my Rate of Descent to be in the region of 6,500 feet per minute. I tried to cutaway my main parachute but with between 22 and 33 'G' Force hitting my body I was unable to do so and then deployed my reserve with the main canopy still attached. This, under normal circumstances would have been fatal, but I had nothing to loose, and everything to gain as at 6,500 FPM I would certainly be dead, and so I rolled the dice. I did not black out as the blood was being forced across my body and not away from my head. The book looks at wingsuit mountain flying, the 007 James Bond and the Queen's skydive into the London Olympics 2012, Felix Baumgartner's skydive from the edges of space and also D. B. Cooper's hijack of a Boeing 727 on 24 November 1971.
