Are you ready to embark on a journey to become a master gunner? Instinctive shooting is an ancient art that has fascinated warriors, hunters, and sport shooters for centuries. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the essential techniques, training methods, and mindset required to hone your shooting skills to perfection. Prepare yourself for an exhilarating adventure into the world of instinctive shooting - the path to becoming a true master gunner!

What is Instinctive Shooting?

Instinctive shooting, also known as point shooting or combat shooting, is a shooting technique that relies on the shooter's innate ability to aim and shoot without relying on traditional sights. Instead of aligning the front and rear sights of a gun, instinctive shooters rely on their subconscious, hand-eye coordination to quickly aim and fire accurately.

This shooting method traces its roots back centuries when archers and warriors had to quickly react and shoot in fast-paced combat situations. With the advent of firearms, instinctive shooting evolved to adapt to the new technology. It became widely popular among law enforcement officers, military personnel, and competitive shooters, as it offers faster target acquisition and increased accuracy in dynamic shooting scenarios.

The Making of a Master Gunner

Instinctive shooting requires a unique set of skills and training to reach mastery. Let's go through the crucial aspects of becoming a true master gunner:

1. Understanding the Fundamentals

Before delving into instinctive shooting, it's vital to have a strong foundation in fundamental shooting techniques. Mastering stances, grip, and trigger control will provide a solid base for your instincts to build upon. Begin by mastering the traditional shooting methods before advancing to instinctive shooting.

2. Developing Eye-Hand Coordination

Instinctive shooting heavily relies on the coordination between your eyes and hands. To improve this crucial skill, practice drills that focus on hand-eye coordination, such as target tracking exercises and quick-draw challenges. Consistent practice will enhance your ability to quickly acquire targets and fire accurately.

3. Visualizing the Target

Mental visualization is a key element in instinctive shooting. Train your mind to create a mental image of the target and its surroundings before you shoot. This practice allows your subconscious to make the necessary adjustments for accurate aim and shot placement.

4. Reading the Body Language

Instinctive shooting relies heavily on reading the body language of your target. By observing their movements, you can anticipate their next actions and adjust your shot accordingly. This skill is particularly useful in dynamic shooting scenarios, where split-second decisions can make all the difference.

5. Building Muscle Memory

Repetition is crucial in mastering any skill, and instinctive shooting is no exception. Engage in regular dry-fire exercises to build muscle memory and reinforce your shooting technique. By repeating the motions consistently, your body will learn to align with your instincts, resulting in faster and more accurate shots.

The Art of Practice

Becoming a master gunner requires dedication and regular practice. Here are some effective training methods to include in your practice routine:

1. Target Acquisition Drills

Set up targets at varying distances and practice quickly acquiring focus on each one. This exercise will help improve your ability to acquire targets swiftly, a crucial skill in instinctive shooting.

2. Moving Target Training

As shooting scenarios often involve moving targets, it's essential to practice shooting while also moving. Set up scenarios where you engage with dynamic targets and practice adjusting your aim while on the move. This drill will simulate real-life situations and improve your shooting accuracy in challenging conditions.

3. Stress Simulation

To truly test your skills, create scenarios that induce stress and pressure, similar to what you may encounter in real-life shooting situations. This simulation will sharpen your focus and allow you to maintain control even in high-stress environments.

The Mindset of a Master Gunner

Instinctive shooting is not solely about technique; it requires the right mindset to excel. Here are some crucial aspects of the master gunner's mindset:

1. Confidence in Instincts

Believe in your instincts and trust your abilities. Confidence plays a vital role in instinctive shooting. Train your mind to have unwavering faith in your ability to make accurate shots without traditional sights.

2. Focus and Concentration

Instinctive shooting demands focus and concentration. Learn to block out distractions and maintain a laser-like focus on the target. This practice will enhance your ability to read the target's movements and react appropriately.

3. Adaptability and Flexibility

Being adaptable and flexible is critical in dynamic shooting scenarios. Practice shooting from various positions, moving, and adjusting your aim quickly. The more versatile your shooting skills are, the better equipped you'll be to handle unpredictable situations.

Instinctive shooting is an art that requires dedication, practice, and the right mindset. By mastering the techniques and training methods discussed in this guide, you will embark on a journey towards becoming a master gunner. Remember, instinctive shooting is not just about hitting targets; it's about honing your instincts and unlocking the true potential of your shooting skills. So, buckle up, embrace the challenge, and become the master gunner you were born to be!

Here, point and shoot.” These words from his father propelled Buz Fawcett’s shooting success as a child, gaining him a number of High Gun awards at local trap clubs by the time he was fourteen. Because of his success, his father awarded him his grandfather’s Model 1912 Winchester, which he mastered, even though it “kicked the whey” out of him.

However, his amazing shooting abilities as a kid didn’t follow him into adulthood. Fawcett entered into what he calls his “Dark Ages” of shooting after accepting an associate editor position at Sports Afield in New York City, where he had to read and edit what other gunmen were writing about shooting techniques. Eventually, he took a position as editor of Guns & Ammo magazine, located in California. He soon found himself in a position where he could shoot as much as he liked.

After a number of years and extensive research into shooting methods, Fawcett rediscovered his talents through a technique called “Instinctive Shooting.” This research and a lot of practice finally led to teaching a workshop on instinctive shooting to help others become adept at this miraculous “point and shoot” method. Instinctive Shooting is Fawcett’s guide for other gunmen, describing exactly how and what needs to be done to achieve the ultimate shooting instincts. Practical and hands-on, the book covers such topics as determining your dominant eye, achieving proper shotgun fit, how to correct point and shoot, selecting equipment, practice regimens, mounting, and much more.
