The Philosophy of Eric Morris: Rejecting Conformity

Eric Morris firmly believes that true artistry lies in stepping away from the beaten path. He advocates for actors to abandon restrictive stereotypes and societal expectations. By rejecting conformity, actors can truly tap into their innermost emotions and experiences, resulting in authentic performances that captivate audiences.

Techniques in Action: Emotional Recall

One of the hallmark techniques of Eric Morris's irreverent acting is emotional recall. While other acting methods encourage actors to "fake it till they make it," Morris challenges performers to access genuine emotions through personal experiences. By revisiting past memories and evoking those emotions, actors can bring an unparalleled depth to their characters.

Let's say an actor is playing a character who experiences heartbreak. Instead of superficially imitating sadness, Morris would encourage them to dig deep into their own memories of heartbreak. By reliving those emotions, the actor can authentically embody the pain and convey it to the audience.

Breaking Free from Expectations: Character Exploration

In traditional acting methods, actors are often confined to predetermined character traits and behaviors. However, in irreverent acting, Eric Morris encourages performers to transcend these limitations and explore characters from a fresh perspective.

For example, if a script portrays a character as a villain, Morris would prompt the actor to look beyond conventional evil traits. By delving into the character's background, motivations, and personal traumas, the actor discovers unexpected layers and complexities. This process results in a multidimensional performance that challenges audience expectations.

Mastering Authenticity: The Moment-to-Moment Technique

Eric Morris believes that authenticity is the key to captivating performances. To achieve this, he developed the moment-to-moment technique. This approach emphasizes the actor's connection to their immediate surroundings and fellow performers.

In this technique, actors actively observe and respond to stimuli in real-time. By being fully present in the moment, they can tap into natural impulses and create authentic interactions. This technique eliminates preconceived notions and allows actors to bring a raw, unfiltered energy to their performances.

The Impact on Actors and Audiences

This irreverent approach to acting has had a profound impact on performers and audiences alike. Actors who have embraced Eric Morris's techniques have experienced newfound creative freedom and have been able to tap into unexplored depths within themselves.

Audiences, on the other hand, are captivated by the raw authenticity that these performances exude. Instead of witnessing predictable and formulaic portrayals, they are treated to performances that are thought-provoking, unpredictable, and deeply relatable.

Join the Irreverent Acting Revolution

Eric believes that this book is the "craft bible," since it focuses entirely on the craft an actor must acquire in order to fulfill dramatic material. The book explores the seven major obligations related to material--time and place, relationship, emotional, character, thematic, historical, and subtextual--and from there goes on to define choices and explain how to use them to fulfill those obligations. The third element of the craft, the choice approaches, is the practical work the actor must do to create the choices. Out of the current thirty-one choice approaches, only twenty-two are explored in this book. The remaining nine are investigated in subsequent books.
