Jesus Taught In Parables: Three Bible Stories for Children
The Power of Jesus' Parables
Throughout his ministry, Jesus taught using parables, which were simple stories that conveyed profound spiritual and moral messages. These stories resonated with people of all ages, including children, because they were relatable and easy to understand. In this article, we will explore three parables that Jesus taught, which are particularly impactful for children.
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
This parable is found in the Gospel of Luke and tells the story of a man who is robbed, beaten, and left for dead on the side of the road. Several people, including a priest and a Levite, pass by without helping him. However, a Samaritan, who was despised by the Jews at that time, stops and provides aid. He goes above and beyond, taking the wounded man to an inn and paying for his care.
The lesson children can learn from this parable is the importance of showing kindness and compassion to everyone, regardless of their background or appearance. Jesus teaches that it's not enough to simply acknowledge the needs of others; we must take action and help those who are in need, even if it means going out of our way or sacrificing something.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep
In this well-known parable, Jesus tells the story of a shepherd who leaves his flock of 99 sheep to search for the one that went astray. The shepherd rejoices when he finds the lost sheep and brings it back to the fold. This parable highlights the immense love and care that Jesus has for each and every one of us.
For children, this parable teaches them that no matter how small or insignificant they may feel, they are valued and loved by Jesus. It also instills a sense of responsibility, encouraging children to look out for their friends or classmates who may be feeling lost or alone, and to reach out to them with kindness and understanding.
The Parable of the Prodigal Son
The parable of the prodigal son is a powerful story of forgiveness, mercy, and reconciliation. It tells the tale of a young man who asks his father for his inheritance and then squanders it all on a life of indulgence. Eventually, the young man finds himself alone and impoverished. He decides to return to his father, hoping to be accepted back as a servant.
However, when he arrives, his father not only welcomes him back with open arms but throws a lavish celebration to mark his return. This parable showcases the unconditional love and forgiveness that God offers to all of his children, regardless of their past mistakes.
For children, this parable provides a powerful lesson about making mistakes and seeking forgiveness. It teaches them that no matter what they have done, they can always turn to God with a sincere heart, and He will forgive them and accept them back into His loving arms. It also encourages children to show the same forgiveness and mercy to others who may have hurt them.
These three parables that Jesus taught – the Good Samaritan, the Lost Sheep, and the Prodigal Son – are not only engaging stories for children but also hold deep spiritual truths. They teach important values such as kindness, compassion, inclusion, forgiveness, and love. By sharing these parables with children, we can help them develop a strong moral foundation and a deeper understanding of the teachings of Jesus. These stories provide valuable life lessons that will stay with them throughout their lives.
