Accidentally Finding Myself In One Very Big Year Lost Among The Birds: Accidentally Finding Myself In One Very Big Year

Have you ever experienced a year that completely changed your life? A year filled with unexpected opportunities, daring adventures, and personal growth beyond your wildest dreams?

That's precisely what happened to me when I embarked on what I now call "One Very Big Year." It all started with a simple decision to step out of my comfort zone and embrace the unknown.

Discovering the Call of the Wild

I've always been an explorer at heart, constantly seeking new experiences and challenges. However, as life unfolded, I found myself stuck in a monotonous routine. Deep down, I knew I needed a change.

One day, while scrolling through the internet, I stumbled upon a mesmerizing photograph of a person standing at the edge of a towering mountain, their arms outstretched towards the vast wilderness. In that moment, I felt an inexplicable connection.

The image sparked a fire inside me, reigniting my passion for adventure. Inspired by this newfound desire, I made a resolution to embark on a journey that would challenge my limits and redefine my sense of self.

The Quest Begins

With a sense of uncertainty and anticipation, I set off on this uncharted path. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of an extraordinary chapter in my life.

First on my list was conquering the great outdoors. I embarked on solo hiking expeditions, immersing myself in nature's wonders. From scaling towering peaks to wandering through lush forests, I found solace and peace in the wilderness.

As I explored the natural world, I discovered the profound impact it had on my mental well-being. The magnificent landscapes provided a sanctuary where I could reflect and rediscover myself. Each step I took became a metaphorical journey towards self-discovery.

Meeting Incredible Souls

One of the unexpected highlights of my journey was the incredible people I encountered along the way. From fellow travelers to local communities, I was continuously inspired by their stories and perspectives.

In remote villages, I witnessed acts of kindness and resilience that touched my heart. From sharing meals with strangers to participating in local traditions, these connections enriched my experience and deepened my understanding of the world.

Embracing the Unpredictable

One key lesson I learned during my big year was the importance of embracing uncertainty. Through the challenges and obstacles I faced, I discovered strength and resilience I never knew I had.

Life is unpredictable, and that's precisely what makes it beautiful. It's in the spontaneous detours and unexpected turns that we find our true selves. I learned to trust the journey, even when the path seemed unclear.

Finding My True Essence

As my One Very Big Year came to an end, I realized that I had found more than just adventure. I had found myself.

The experiences, the people, and the moments of self-reflection shaped me into a version of myself I never imagined possible. I had grown stronger, more resilient, and more compassionate.

My One Very Big Year became a catalyst for personal transformation, awakening my spirit and reminding me of the endless possibilities that life has to offer.

Continuing the Journey

While my One Very Big Year may have officially ended, my transformation and thirst for exploration continue to thrive. I now live life with an open mind and a daring spirit, always ready to embrace the next adventure.

If you find yourself longing for something more, yearning to break free from the mundane, I encourage you to embark on your own One Very Big Year. You may be surprised by the incredible journey of self-discovery that awaits you.

Remember, life is meant to be lived to the fullest.

Early in 2013 Neil Hayward was at a crossroads. He didn't want to open a bakery or whatever else executives do when they quit a lucrative but unfulfilling job. He didn't want to think about his failed relationship with “the one” or his potential for ruining a new relationship with “the next one.” And he almost certainly didn't want to think about turning forty. And so instead he went birding.

Birding was a lifelong passion. It was only among the birds that Neil found a calm that had eluded him in the confusing world of humans. But this time he also found competition. His growing list of species reluctantly catapulted him into a Big Year--a race to find the most birds in one year. His peregrinations across twenty-eight states and six provinces in search of exotic species took him to a hoarfrost-covered forest in Massachusetts to find a Fieldfare; to Lake Havasu, Arizona, to see a rare Nutting's Flycatcher; and to Vancouver for the Red-flanked Bluetail. Neil's Big Year was as unplanned as it was accidental: It was the perfect distraction to life.

Neil shocked the birding world by finding 749 species of bird and breaking the long-standing Big Year record. He also surprised himself: During his time among the hummingbirds, tanagers, and boobies, he found a renewed sense of confidence and hope about the world and his place in it.
