CEDRIC ROBINSON is internationally famous for his unique role in guiding more than 10,000 people a year over the treacherous sands of Morecambe Bay. He has now held the historic office of ‘Queen’s Guide to the Kent Sands’ for almost half a century – a longer period than any of his predecessors.

Records of the previous twenty-four guides stretch back to 1536 and the reign of Henry VIII, but none can surely equal Cedric’s achievements. He has transformed what was becoming an archaic piece of history into a modern-day recreational institution. From small beginnings his cross-Bay walks have grown to the extent that some 400,000 people have now participated under his expert guidance. Apart from the Duke of Edinburgh, they include such noted celebrities as Melvyn Bragg, Alan Titchmarsh, Victoria Wood and Bill Bryson.

Although aged 76, Cedric’s passion and enthusiasm for his chosen calling remain undiminished. His unique knowledge of Morecambe Bay and its shifting sands is regularly called on by the media and rescue organisations. He has received numerous honorary degrees and awards but remains a modest man happiest in the landscape he so clearly loves.

Cedric Robinson has been guiding people across the Kent Sands for the last forty-five years, and he has some remarkable tales to tell. Back in 1985, I entrusted myself and my carriage and team of horses to his guidance – and lived to tell the tale!
