The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln is a well-known and tragic event in American history. However, what many people don't know is that there was a first conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln even before his eventual assassination at Ford's Theatre. This untold story will leave you shocked and amazed at the lengths some individuals were willing to go to eliminate one of the greatest leaders in the United States.

The Background

The year was 1861, just a few months after Lincoln assumed the presidency. The country was in turmoil, with states seceding from the Union and the threat of civil war looming. Against this backdrop, a secret society known as "The Knights of the Golden Circle" emerged, dedicated to the preservation of slavery and Southern rights.

The Knights of the Golden Circle quickly gained traction and support in the South. Their members included influential politicians, military officers, and wealthy plantation owners. With their deep pockets and extensive network, they hatched a plan to rid the country of Lincoln and ensure the survival of slavery.

The First Conspiracy

The first conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln took shape when John W. Booth, a well-known actor and sympathizer of the Southern cause, offered his services to the Knights. Booth was charismatic, suave, and had connections with influential individuals. He proved to be the perfect candidate for the task at hand.

Under the direct instruction of high-ranking members of the Knights, Booth began gathering like-minded individuals who were willing to carry out the assassination plot. Their plan involved ambushing Lincoln's carriage as he traveled through Baltimore on his way to his inauguration in Washington, D.C.

The conspirators meticulously planned and coordinated their actions. They scouted the route, identified strategic locations along the way, and acquired weapons for the attack. Everything seemed to be falling into place for the conspiracy to succeed.

A Twist of Fate

However, fate had other plans. Through a stroke of luck, Allan Pinkerton, a renowned detective, learned about the conspiracy and immediately set out to protect Lincoln. Pinkerton managed to get word to Lincoln, who reluctantly agreed to change his travel plans and sneak into Washington, D.C., under the cover of darkness.

On the night of February 23, 1861, Lincoln disguised himself and, accompanied by Pinkerton and a few trusted operatives, successfully made it through Baltimore undetected. The first conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln failed, but it served as a grim reminder of the dangers he would face throughout his presidency.

The Aftermath

The failed conspiracy did not discourage the Knights of the Golden Circle. They regrouped and continued their activities in the shadows. Years later, Booth would go on to play a key role in the successful assassination of Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in 1865.

The first conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln remains a lesser-known chapter in history, overshadowed by the dramatic events that unfolded during his presidency. However, it serves as a reminder of the deep divisions that existed within the country during those tumultuous times and the lengths some were willing to go to protect their beliefs.

The first conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln unveils a captivating and unsettling tale of intrigue and betrayal. It sheds light on the shadowy world of secret societies and their desperate attempts to shape the course of history. While the attempt ultimately failed, it serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers faced by one of America's most revered presidents.

The Complete Story of the First Attempt to Assassinate President Abraham Lincoln

"In a thrilling detective story of conspiracy, treachery and assassination, Michael J. Kline suggests how close the Baltimore plotters came to achieving their goal, and reveals how Lincoln and a few guards outwitted them. Meticulously researched and written with verve, "The Baltimore Plot" takes readers aboard Lincoln's inaugural train for a perilous and unforgettable journey." —James L. Swanson, author of the Edgar Award-winning New York Times bestseller Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer

On February 11, 1861, the "Lincoln Special" - Abraham Lincoln's private train—began its journey from Springfield, Illinois, to the City of Washington, carrying the president-elect to his inauguration as the sixteenth president of the United States. Considered a "sectional candidate" by the South, and winning the election without the popular vote, Lincoln was so despised that seven states immediately seceded from the Union. Over the next twelve days, Lincoln would speak at numerous stops, including Indianapolis, Columbus, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Albany, New York, and Philadelphia, expressing his desire to maintain the Union. But as Lincoln made his way east, America's first private detective, Allan Pinkerton, and a separate undercover operation by New York City detectives, uncovered startling evidence of a conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln during his next-to-last stop in Baltimore. Long a site of civil unrest—even Robert E. Lee's father, Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee, was nearly beaten to death in its streets—Baltimore provided the perfect environment for a strike. The largest city of a border state with secessionist sympathies, Baltimore had been infiltrated by paramilitary groups bent on killing Lincoln, the "Black Republican." The death of the president-elect would, it was supposed, throw the nation into chaos and allow the South to establish a new nation and claim Washington as its capital. Warned in time, Lincoln outfoxed the alleged conspirators by slipping through Baltimore undetected, but at a steep price. Ridiculed by the press for "cowardice" and the fact that no conspirators were charged, Lincoln would never hide from the public again. Four years later, when he sat unprotected in the balcony of Ford's Theatre, the string of conspiracies against his life finally succeeded. One of the great presidential mysteries and long a source of fascination among Lincoln scholars, the Baltimore Plot has never been fully investigated until now. In The Baltimore Plot: The First Conspiracy to Assassinate Abraham Lincoln, Michael J. Kline turns his legal expertise to evaluating primary sources in order to discover the extent of the conspiracy and culpability of the many suspects surrounding the case. Full of memorable characters, including Kate Warne, the first female undercover agent, and intriguing plot twists, the story is written as an unfolding criminal proceeding in which the author allows the reader to determine whether there was a true plot to kill Lincoln and if the perpetrators could have been brought to trial.
