The Trump era has been marked by a storm of disinformation, divisiveness, and chaos. It seems like every day there is a new scandal, a new lie, and a new threat to the foundations of our democracy. In this age of political Thunderdome, it is more important than ever for us to arm ourselves with facts, stand up for truth, and take back our democracy.

The rise of social media has given a platform to anyone with an internet connection and a voice. While this can be a great tool for spreading information and promoting dialogue, it has also become a breeding ground for disinformation and manipulation. The spread of fake news, conspiracy theories, and extremist views has reached unprecedented levels, and it is tearing at the fabric of our society.

The Age of Trumpian Disinformation

Donald Trump's presidency ushered in a new era of disinformation. From his very first day in office, he and his administration were not afraid to lie to the American people. Whether it was about the size of the inauguration crowd or the existence of climate change, the truth became malleable in the hands of those in power.

Trump's use of social media, particularly Twitter, became a powerful weapon in his arsenal of disinformation. He would tweet false and misleading statements with no regard for the consequences. These tweets would then be shared and amplified by his supporters, creating a cycle of misinformation that was difficult to break.

One of the most dangerous aspects of Trumpian disinformation was the erosion of trust in traditional news sources. The phrase "fake news" became a household term, and any news article that did not align with one's preconceived notions was dismissed as such. The influence of credible journalists was diminished, and opinion and propaganda took their place.

The Rise of Political Thunderdome

The political landscape in the age of Trump has become a battleground. Social media has become the Thunderdome of politics, where anyone can enter but not everyone survives. It is a place where facts can be twisted, narratives can be manipulated, and reputations can be destroyed in an instant.

Political discourse has devolved into shouting matches, where insults and personal attacks are the norm. Instead of engaging in thoughtful discussion, people retreat into their echo chambers, surrounding themselves with like-minded individuals who validate their opinions. The result is further polarization and the spread of extreme ideologies.

Additionally, the rise of misinformation has led to a decline in trust and faith in our democratic institutions. When people no longer believe in the legitimacy of elections or the efficacy of their government, the very foundations of our democracy are at risk. It is imperative that we restore trust and faith in the democratic process, especially in a time when disinformation runs rampant.

Taking Back Our Democracy

In order to take back our democracy, we must first acknowledge the power of disinformation and the harm it can cause. We need to educate ourselves about media literacy and critical thinking skills, so that we can distinguish between truth and fiction. Fact-checking organizations and credible news sources are crucial allies in this battle.

Furthermore, we must actively engage in open and honest dialogue with those who hold opposing views. It is important to listen, understand, and respect differing perspectives, even if we may not agree with them. Engaging in respectful conversations can help bridge the divide and promote understanding.

Another crucial step in reclaiming our democracy is to hold those in power accountable. This means not only calling out disinformation when we see it but also demanding transparency from our elected officials. By staying informed and actively participating in the democratic process, we can ensure that our voices are heard and that our democracy remains strong.

The age of Trumpian disinformation and Thunderdome politics has presented us with unique challenges, but it has also reminded us of the importance of a well-informed and engaged citizenry. By arming ourselves with facts, engaging in respectful dialogue, and holding those in power accountable, we can take back our democracy from the grips of disinformation. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that we fight for truth, unity, and the future of our democracy.

In An Uncivil War, the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent sounds an urgent alarm about the deeper roots of our democratic backsliding—and how we can begin to turn things around between now and 2020.

American democracy is facing a crisis as fraught as we’ve seen in decades. Donald Trump’s presidency has raised the specter of authoritarian rule. Extreme polarization and the scorched-earth war between the parties drags on with no end in sight. The recent Kavanaugh confirmation hearings are only the latest example of this, and of the GOP’s continued ability to steamroll the Democrats and their supporters.

At the heart of this dangerous moment is a paradox: It took a figure as uniquely menacing as Trump to rivet the nation’s attention on the fragility of our democracy. Yet the causes of our dysfunction are long-running—they predate Trump, helped facilitate his rise, and, distressingly, will outlast his presidency.

In An Uncivil War, Sargent reveals why we’ve fallen into the ditch—and how to get out of it. Drawing upon years of research and reporting, he exposes the unparalleled sophistication and ambition of GOP tactics, including computer-generated gerrymandering, underhanded voter suppression, and ever-escalating legislative hardball. We are also plagued by other brutal, seemingly intractable problems such as dismal turnout and powerful, built-in temptations to tilt the political playing field with unscrupulous partisan trickery. All of this has been accompanied by foreign-government intervention and an unprecedented level of political disinformation that threatens to undermine the very possibility of shared agreement on facts and poses profound new challenges to the media’s ability to inform the citizenry. Yet the Republican Party is only part of the problem. As Sargent provocatively reveals, Democrats share culpability for helping to accelerate this slide.

But our plight is far from hopeless, and Sargent offers a series of doable prescriptions for saving our democracy, including a shift of focus toward state legislatures, creative voter registration policies, innovative approaches to fairer districting, and a new sense of purpose. The result is a book that could not be more essential as we head toward the elections that most matter.
