“Garvey Lives!” the first drama about the renowed black civil rights activist Marcus Garvey, had its premier production at Brown University in 1972. It was directed by George Houston Bass, founder of Rite and Reason, the first black student drama group in the Ivy League, and funded by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts.
Garvey was one of the most remarkable, controversial, and picturesque world figures of the twentieth century.Termed demogogue and prophet, visionary and con man, he successfully organized a mass movement that harnessed black people's fierce race consciousness of post-World War I to work through a practical medium toward a definite objective: "Up you mighty race, you can accomplish what you will!
Africa for the Africans! was his mantra.
Through the Universal Negro Improvement Association, Marcus Garvey opened windows in the mind of blacks. His program of black nationalism, viewed in the 1920s by prominent black leaders as a grandiose and bombastic scheme, stirred the race consciousness of black people throughout the world, and gave birth to the fervent black nationalist and Pan-African movements that followed,
Garveyism inspired both International and American black liberation movements led by Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, the Black Panthers, and Martin Luther King, Jr.,
In 1923, Garvey was convicted of mail fraud and sentenced to five years in prison. His appeal, based on spurious evidence presented by J. Edgar Hoover, was denied. In 1927 he was released from prison and deported to Jamaica.
Marcus Garvey was Jamaica's first national hero. His shrine is located in the National Heroes Park.In his honor, Ghana named its shipping line the Black Star Line and its national soccer team the Black Stars.
Beckham describes his playin 10 scenes as a surreal amalgam of interrelated scenes forming a central impression.
