When it comes to exploring the rich history of Safavid Persia, most enthusiasts turn to renowned sources like Shahnama or Ain-i-Akbari. However, tucked away in the treasure troves of German archives lay captivating accounts that shed light on this fascinating era. From detailed travelogues to insightful diplomatic reports, these German sources offer a unique perspective that complements and enriches our understanding of the Safavid Empire.

The German Travelogues: A Glimpse into the Exotic Orient

The 17th century witnessed a surge of German travelers embarking on exploratory voyages to distant lands, including the heartland of Safavid Persia. These intrepid adventurers, armed with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for discovery, meticulously documented their observations and experiences.

One such notable travelogue is that of Adam Olearius, a scholar and diplomat, who ventured to Persia in the 1630s as part of a diplomatic mission. His account "Voyage to Persia," provides vivid descriptions of the Safavid court, its opulent traditions, and the grandeur of Isfahan. Olearius' work offers a firsthand glimpse into the cultural and social fabric of Safavid Persia, making it an invaluable resource for historians.

Another remarkable travelogue from this period is Johann Albrecht von Mandelslo's "Voyages and Travells into the East Indies, Containing a Great Variety of Strange and Surprizing Adventures both by Sea and Land." Mandelslo's comprehensive narrative encompasses his journey through Persia and other parts of the Orient, unraveling intriguing tales of diplomacy, exploration, and encounters with great Safavid rulers.

Diplomatic Relations: German Ambassadors and Safavid Courts

Germany's diplomatic ties with Safavid Persia played a crucial role in bridging the gap between cultures. Through the exchange of envoys and ambassadors, Germany established an intricate web of political relationships that helped shape Safavid Persia's interactions with the rest of Europe.

The records of these diplomatic missions provide valuable insights into the socio-political dynamics of Safavid Persia. One notable example is the "Reports on Persia" by Adam Olearius, who not only chronicled his journey but also delved into the delicate intricacies of diplomatic negotiations. His writings shed light on the court etiquettes, political alliances, and behind-the-scenes dealings, making it an indispensable source for understanding Safavid Persia's foreign relations.

The Marvellous Collections: German Libraries and Archives

Germany's dedication to preserving historical records has catapulted its libraries and archives into guardians of invaluable primary sources. Institutions such as the Bavarian State Library and the German National Library boast extensive collections that house a wealth of Safavid Persia-related documents.

The painstakingly curated archives at these institutions offer researchers access to patronage papers, diplomatic correspondence, personal letters, and much more. These records provide a multifaceted understanding of the Safavid Empire, allowing historians to piece together intriguing narratives that delve beyond the commonly known chronicles.

Unlocking New Narratives: Embracing Germany's Contribution

While German sources may not be as widely known as their Persian or English counterparts, they bring a fresh perspective to the study of Safavid Persia. By weaving together multiple sources, historians can create a comprehensive tapestry that encompasses diverse viewpoints and new narratives.

Exploring the German sources on Safavid Persia not only broadens our understanding of this captivating era but also highlights the importance of embracing lesser-known sources to gain a holistic view of historical events. So let us embark on this journey back in time, embracing the untold stories that Germany's archives have to offer.

For this book, Willem Floor has selected and translated into English thirteen German sources reporting on events in Iran from 1580 to 1722. One of these sources has never been published before; four of them are complete books, while the others only have sections dealing with Iran. Most of these sources are unknown to scholars either because they are hard to find or because the Gothic script and obsolete words makes them difficult to read, even for German scholars. Ten are travel books: six largely about Bandar Abbas and Qeshm. Three of the authors narrate their encounters with Persia and Persians, from Azerbaijan down to the Persian Gulf and Qandahar. One is a fragment of a diary with very interesting information, and the last two were written to inform the interested reader about Iran, its geography, its people, its economy and its type of government. In fact, the last book was especially written to apprise the public about current events in Iran in 1722, providing breaking news on the Russian invasion of Persia with background information for context. These translations provide much new information for scholars interested in Safavid Persia. They also shed light on how Europeans viewed Persia and Persians, and how they were able to learn about them without having to travel there.
