This issue is also available as a Box Set or Combo Package titled: “How to Draw 20 at the Beach, Outdoors, at the Farm, Silhouettes, Trees.”

How to Draw 20 at the Beach: My father's family lived in a port town on the Pacific. Their house stayed in the family until a few years ago. Most of my memories of going to the beach take place in that small port town.
Whenever I wanted to get away from the city, I would let my aunt I was coming, and I would take the evening bus. Everything was safe back then. We as children and teenagers were free to go on such visits when we wished.
My aunt cooked differently than my mom, but her food was also great. She still had an old ice box rather than a refrigerator and cooked on a kerosene stove. I never liked fish, but I did eat it and enjoyed it when I would go fishing with my uncle and we would cook it under a palm tree by the seashore.
I always forgot to bring flip flops. Walking from the house to the beach was an ordeal for me because I was not used to walking barefooted on gravel roads, even though the beach was only a block and a half from the house.
I really enjoyed the beach. I enjoyed the water, the sand, the waves, and the people. It was nice when I could be around a group of friends.
On one of my last visits before I left the country, I invited my art teacher to come spend the day with me. He came with his wife and daughter and was clever enough to also bring a girl that took lessons at their atelier. There must be something romantic or magical about the beach… because I came back from that trip with my first girlfriend ever. You never know what can happen at the beach.

Learning to draw is a joyful journey of discovery, not only of the world we perceive or imagine but also of ourselves and the way we interpret that world. As we get better at drawing, we begin to develop our own style, our own voice. This voyage of discovery teaches us to observe the world and to see relationships we may have never noticed before. We learn to appreciate objects, shapes, movement, light, and even shadows.
Drawing is a universal language. We say that a picture is worth a thousand words. That is why there are no words in the lessons. The process of learning to draw is visual. We must learn to see what we draw.
Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Even your most awful picture can teach you to see something new. You might discover how to judge the angle of a line, or the curvature of a shape, or the light falling on an object.
Drawing is fun. Do not be discouraged thinking that you should be able to draw everything imaginable from the beginning. It rarely works that way. We do not always draw from our imagination. Reference materials, like this book, are necessary even for professional artists. Often, we study motion, posture, and technique. Models may have to be brought in to pose as if they are walking, dancing, or fighting. We even go to study animals at the zoo.
Knowing how to draw is an invaluable talent, especially if you are interested in animation and game production as a future career.
Learning to draw is also a commitment, a decision you make to develop a talent that will fill you with creative joy, a talent you will never bury or forget.

Keep drawing. Practice daily and you will be well on your way to mastery in this most joyful journey of discovery.
