For two years, during 2011-13, the author of this book lived and worked in and around Hanoi, the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and regularly filed articles and opinion columns for the local Vietnam Pathfinder magazine.
The cultural topics covered were diverse ranging from the treatment of historical artifacts and tourism to environmental and moral dilemmas facing the people of Northern Vietnam.
The articles and photos provide an insight into the people, places, situations, thoughts and concerns as it emerged from being a developing economy to one officially classed by the UN as a lower middle-income country.
The economic changes have happened quickly and while some have prospered others have struggled to make the transition from an agricultural-based society to one founded on a version of capitalism. The ruling and only political party has faced similar problems in incorporating capitalist thinking into the Socialist manifesto.
Not surprisingly perhaps, certain political issues were seen as sensitive. For example, during this time the Government implemented a ban on negative comments about them being posted on any form of social media.
By reproducing the articles here for the first time as an edited collection it is hoped to shed light on some lesser known elements of life in Vietnam today.
