For most of the dances described in Thoinot Arbeau's Orchesographie, published in Langres in 1589, only a melody is given, but in the sixteenth century it was common for dance music to be provided by a band of loud or soft (haut or bas) instruments as the occasion demanded. As an aid to finding multi-part settings of Arbeau's dance tunes I have presented here a list of the dances described in Orchesographie, in the order in which Arbeau describes them, with each dance keyed by number to the accompanying bibliography of original sources and modern editions of 16th century dance music. For dances for which Arbeau provides a tune but for which there is no known setting, or no known modern edition of a 16th century setting, I have provided my own four-part setting in 16th century style or my own tanscription of an extant setting.
