Interest has never been greater in tracing one’s ancestry. People begin such searches for a variety of reasons, and Ron Clement DeLelles’ was poignant: he knew next to nothing about Bulgaria, this remote country in the Balkans from which his mother’s family emigrated. Yet he felt compelled to learn more.
When a devastating turning point in Ron’s life and career involving family and business left him shaken to the core, he began asking himself, “What does it really mean to be family? Why does it mean so much to some people and much less to others? Should it be valued above money or success?” He confesses, “The questions consumed me.”

Thus began Ron’s quest to make sense of life’s difficult questions. Looking to his family’s obscure background for answers, Ron accompanied his mother on a visit to her parent’s homeland in 2004. Their journey to Bulgaria revealed a culture replete with compassion and what Ron calls “a simple, heartfelt concern for others.”

The result of this odyssey was Roses for Marie – A Remarkable Journey of Discovery in Bulgaria. Ron notes, “This is the story of my search for family – the desire, the process, and the implausible outcome.” He adds, “It celebrates the best of human relationships and seeks to unravel the mystique of what it means to be family. What I didn’t expect was how strongly it would alter my priorities and impact my thinking.”
