The Birth of a Legend

It was the 1960s when British motorcycle manufacturers Triumph and BSA decided to join forces and create a powerful, high-performance machine that would capture the hearts of riders worldwide. The result was the birth of two legendary motorcycles - the Triumph Trident and the BSA Rocket.

Introduced in 1968, the Triumph Trident made its mark as the first production three-cylinder motorcycle from the British manufacturer. With its innovative design and robust engine, the Trident quickly gained popularity among motorcycle enthusiasts looking for a thrilling and reliable ride. Its distinctive sound and smooth power delivery made it a force to be reckoned with on both the streets and the racetrack.

Meanwhile, BSA, once famous for its single-cylinder bikes, aimed to reinvent itself with the of the BSA Rocket. Designed as a more refined version of the Triumph Trident, the Rocket boasted a sleeker appearance and subtle technical enhancements. It aimed to cater to riders seeking a balance between comfort and performance.

Triumph Trident: Power and Performance

At the heart of the Triumph Trident was its legendary 741cc three-cylinder engine, which produced an impressive 58 horsepower. This power-packed engine provided exhilarating acceleration and a top speed of around 115 mph, making it a force to be reckoned with on the open road. Riders were captivated by the smooth power delivery and the distinctive exhaust note that echoed from the triple exhaust pipes, creating a symphony of excitement with every twist of the throttle. The Trident's handling prowess and responsive brakes further enhanced its reputation as a true performance machine.

Not only beloved by riders, but the Triumph Trident also made its mark in the racing world. It showcased its exceptional capabilities by winning races and breaking records, solidifying its status as a formidable competitor on tracks worldwide. Motorcycle enthusiasts flocked to dealerships to get their hands on the iconic Trident, etching its place in history as a true symbol of power and performance.

BSA Rocket: Elegance Meets Performance

The BSA Rocket, born from the same heritage as the Trident, offered riders a refined and comfortable riding experience. Although sharing the same basic engine as the Trident, BSA engineers made subtle modifications to enhance ride comfort and usability. The Rocket featured an elegant design with its sweeping lines, chrome finishes, and plush seat, appealing to riders seeking a touch of luxury.

With a slightly detuned engine that produced around 49 horsepower, the BSA Rocket offered a smooth and effortless ride. However, don't let its refined appearance deceive you - the Rocket was still a capable machine on the open road. Its comfortable riding position, precise handling, and confidence-inspiring brakes made it the perfect companion for long journeys or spirited rides through picturesque landscapes.

The Legacy Continues

Though the production of the Triumph Trident discontinued in 1975, and the BSA Rocket faced a similar fate shortly after, their legacies continue to live on. These classic British motorcycles have become cherished collector's items, fervently sought after by enthusiasts who understand and appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of these machines.

Today, there is a thriving community of Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket enthusiasts who dedicate their efforts to preserving, restoring, and showcasing these timeless motorcycles. The 3-cylinder Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3 were developed to compete with Honda’s forthcoming 750cc motorcycle. Initially they did not compare well – although very fast, they lacked sophistication and their quirky styling was offputting – and the decision was made to suspend production. This was not the most auspicious start, but a fightback was initiated and in 1971 the factory race team had a triumphant year including placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the Daytona 200. With over 250 photographs, the full rollercoaster-ride history of these bikes is described, including: how the bikes came to be, including a timeline of significant events; a year-by-year account of the evolution of the bikes, through the T150, T160 and Rocket 3; the story of the Hurricane; the full racing history and, finally, the Triumph 3-cylinder bikes today.
