Man o' War didn't run in the Kentucky Derby because owner Samuel D. Riddle thought the race came too early in the year and at too taxing a distance. For that reason, Man o' War was denied a bid at a Triple Crown he undoubtedly would have won. But nearly two decades later, Riddle had a change of heart.
In 1937, he agreed to run War Admiral, a son of the great Man o' War, in the Derby. War Admiral swept the Triple Crown and established himself as Man o' War's best son. Author Edward L. Bowen, biographer of Man o' War, chronicles the exploits of his son, including War Admiral's historic battle with the great Seabiscuit. War Admiral raced until the age of five, then was retired to Riddle's farm in Kentucky. There, he distinguished himself as a stallion, siring Horse of the Year Busher and other champions.
